Weekend Getaway to Mahabaleshwar

The heat was getting unbearable and there was nothing much to do during one of the weekends in Pune.  The very thought of fresh strawberry cream, sky hugging mountains, chilly weather, picturesque views and serpentine roads was tempting enough to backpack immediately and get on the road. Mahabaleshwar is a hill station in India’s Western Ghats range to the south of Mumbai. The place is closer to Pune. This place is also the source of Krishna river that flows across four states of India. So one early Saturday morning we decided to start our journey to Mahabaleshwar covering Panchgani and Wai.  The term Mahabaleshwar means God with immense strength.  Apart from vantage points like Venna Lake, Arthur’s Seat, Kate’s Point and Table top land, we also visited Mapro Gardens to divulge into their famous strawberry cream. One was not enough for me!  On our way back via Wai, we stopped at Dholya Ganapati temple and Mapro Jam Factory. Shots of fresh squashes were available for sample tasting. I still remember the look the lady gave during one of my tasting samples. These are meant for tasting and not for drinking.  The brand Mapro stands for Mahabaleshwar products. We also saw an Indian Flag hoisted on the main building.  All the chocolates and candies are made from fruits and vegetables grown in house. We visited part of the garden where these were grown. Overall the trip was refreshing and was a great rescue from the sweltering heat of Pune city.
