Clarke Quay

Clarke Quay is a riverside quay in Singapore situated upstream from the mouth of Singapore river and Boat Quay.  It was named after Sir Andrew Clarke, Singapore’s second governor.

Singapore River has been the center of trade since 1819. Boat Quay was the commercial center where barge lighters would transport goods upstream to the warehouse at Clarke Quay.  This continued till Singapore River started getting polluted which made the government to take a decision to relocate the cargo services to Pasir Panjang.   They cleaned up the river and revamped the whole place turning into commercial, residential and entertainment precinct.

Today its the hub for Singapore’s night life with many pubs and bars and lots  of restaurants by the river side spoiling you for choice.  Its closer and walking distance to many hotels like Holiday Inn Express, Somerset, Novotel and so on.  When we arrived at Singapore, we were stationed at Holiday Inn Express and walk to this quay was a daily affair.  You can find people lazying around and sitting near the river side, few of them even enjoying the boat rides.

If you are on look out for extreme adventures, try out G-Max Reverse Bungy and GX-5 Extreme Swing .  The sheer look of it gives you an adrenaline rush.  The swings were designed and created in New Zealand. It hits the speed up to 100/120 kph.  People queue in to try this.

You also see free belly dancing show outside Shiraz restaurant.  The dancer dances to the tune of Arabic music which can be heard when you start walking from the taxi drop off point of Clarke Quay. The funny part is the dance and show is for the people eating at Shiraz restaurant but none seem to bother to look.  Few of them are so busy indulging in their hookahs that they don’t look to be as part of this world. Most of the spectators are outsiders or passersby who get a free visual treat!

You can also see an imitation to resemble the Paris’s Pont des Arts love lock bridge.  The heart shaped structure has too many locks tied to the rim and its a favorite posing point for the lovers. Hopefully the locks are not big enough to collapse it with its weight.

Lovers Photo Moments

I don’t personally enjoy this area much but its great for people who prefer clubbing till late night.
